Cork to a Window

Today in class we had to do a project where we measure amounts of vinegar and baking soda. Our group did not touch the window but we got a few centimeters away only if we shot it higher. We were given a box a of baking soda and a beaker of vinegar. Our tries varied, we just couldn't get the amounts right. We were told to find the exact amount of vinegar and baking soda that will shoot our cork from one side of the room to another. We have another day to do this but it will still be difficult. More then one try is available so there will be many chances to get this correct. I think that this lab can help our problem solving and measurement skills. It is also a really fun project, we learn and have fun. Just what kids need.

Extra Credit Response!

I think that this quote means that even if you thought of something and didn't share it you should not get credit. I think this because when you get an idea that you think can change the world or even help the world you should share it because your idea isn't going to share itself. The minute you have an amazing idea, or an idea you think is amazing you should share it with people (be sure to use the copy right button :p.) Be sure to share your great ideas with the world instead of letting somebody else take all the credit when they share it with the world. When a man or woman does share it with the world, the world won't believe if you thought of the idea, they'll give all the credit to the person who shared it.

Plasticity Lab

Today in science class we were assigned a lab called the Plasticity Lab. When we sat at our lab tables we saw corn starch mixed with water with blue food coloring. I had to evaluate whether or not this mixture was a solid or a liquid. This experiment's solution was very hard to determine whether or it was a solid or a liquid because at first when we rolled it up between our hands the corn starch turned into a solid. After we pulled our hand away and left the corn starch on just one hand it became a liquid. I finally came to a conclusion that the mixture is both solid and liquid.

Flamingo's specialities

Flamingo's are known for its wonderful unique look but have you ever wondered why most flamingos only stand on one foot? This beautiful bird has caused Matthew Anderson, a psychologist at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia to question many aspects. One question he had, but later on recieved an answer is, "why do flamingos only stand on one foot?" He found out that they do this because with one leg they keep their body heat up and they don't strain both leg muscles. If a predator came near a flamingo, they would have the energy to run because both legs aren't stiff. Matthew Anderson when to the Philadelphia Zoo and observed flamingos too see what their movements are and how they stand and rest. When flamingos are in cooler weather, they stand on one leg, when it is warmer they stand on two legs. Flamingos usually spend most of their time in the water, water tends to take most of your body heat away, this is why flamingos conserve their body head by lifting one leg and keeping it near their body so they can be warmer. Personally, I think that flamingos are unique animals and that they stand with only one leg because they like to keep their balance and practice balancing. Also, I believe that what Matthew Anderson did was good because most people don't observe flamingos of all animals, so Mr. Anderson decided to make a change and research weird questions about flamingos like, "why do flamingos only stand on one leg?"

Corn Starch

The mixture was very soft and gooey. Also, when the gushy substance was in your hands it was hard like a solid, when you lifted one hand upwards the substance became liquid. When you are rolling the mixture in your hand it becomes a solid and turns hard. When you life one hand up it becomes softer and softer and turns into a liquid. When I pushed my finger inside quickly the substance felt soft and then hard. When my finger went inside slowly the substance felt hard. Ways corn starch and water combined compares to Earth's mantle because of the movement. A solid that acts like a liquid is the athensopshere, a soft layer,which is molten lava, that is similar to the corn starch because the liquid acted as the solid. The layer is a harder layer right under the crust is the lithosphere, the corn starch is turned into solid under the palm of your hands.

October Sky Response Blog

A few ways the movie October Sky relates to Earth Science is that underground the mines are formed. Another example is how the rocket was stuck in space and could not come back. Also, Homer's father tried to help a man because something happened in the mines under ground, but he failed, therefore causing Earth's substance to fall on the poor man. Lastly, Homer won the science fair and is going to the nationals, this relates to Earth Science because with all the rockets shooting upwards can cause some reaction in the sky and/or ground.

Physical Science also appears in this movie various times. A few ways are that when the rocket finally worked that gave him a higher chance of being in the science fair at his local high school. That relates to physical science because physics moves the rocket. Also, during science class for Homer, he poured chemicals in the sink and a girl threw a flame into the sink, this caused a chemical reaction caused by physics and made a large flame. The last sign of physical science I found in the movie is when the coal fell on the man and unfortunately died. Physics caused the coal in the mine to fall upon the man's head.

How math is used in this movie is when Homer and his friends are trying to figure out what is needed to build a rocket. Another way is when Homer and his friends are trying to figure out where to launch the rocket. Lastly, when Homer tries to figure out where his last rocket landed to prove himself not guilty of causing a forest fire.

Character Ed was also used in this movie. Six ways they were used are :

• Homer wanted to build a rocket and he is eager to build it.
• Homer's dad is rude and mean to Homer because of his dream.
• Homer and his friends are cooperating.
• Homer & friends didn't want to get in trouble once again so they burned down the rocket house.
• Homer has to provide money and work in the mines so his family can keep his house, so Homer gives up his dream for the time and works in the mines.

• Homer's dad can get back to work and Homer can begin to work on teaching everybody about rockets.

These show how Homer showed Character ed in the movie October Sky.

I am responding PinkBubbles4589 on her blog about Fragile X-Syndrome. The symptoms for this disease is mental issues, "autistic like behavior" slow at speaking or problems with speaking, weird physical or behavioral problems and it can be passed on by any family members. There is no treatment for this disease, but they are trying to find one. Also, there isn't proof that Fragile X-Syndrome can kill you. It is a common disease within men and women, 1 out of 3600 for men and 1 out of 6000 for women have Fragile X-Syndrome IN THE WORLD! Mostly, men are able to get it because their hormones may protect the Syndrome. What happens in the cell is that if the genes that trigger the disease turns off and causes the cell to have less protein then regular, which causes the cell to tell the gene that is related to Fragile X-Syndrome. People still need to research because there isn't a cure for this disease because it is easy to receive it. I believe that it is difficult to live with Fragile X-Syndrome because it is a disease and you have problems with your body. The questions I still have after reading this blog is, will there ever be a cure?

Turner's Syndrome

The disease I'm researching is Turner's Syndrome, this disease was discovered during the year of 1951. If women have Turner's Syndrome, the symptoms are:

• Shorter then regular women
• They cannot conceive children because their ovaries don't work.
• They have extra skin on their neck.
• Swelling on hands and feet
• Heart effects
• and Kidney problems

The treatments for this disease is therapy. Therapy may not always work but, it helps mildly. The mortality of this disease is they may live until the age of 17, it would be a miracle if they lived longer then the age of 17. Only one out of 2,500 women are born with Turner's Syndrome world wide. Women are most vulnerable to Turner's Syndrome, men cannot get this disease.What happens at the "MOLECULAR" level with the genes that cause the disease are that people with Turner's Syndrome are born with one X- Chromosome. Regular females are born with two X- Chromosomes. If you have Turner's Syndrome that means you were born with one X- Chromosome. Another treatment is not possible because Turner's Syndrome is hard to fight.

What I think about this syndrome is that women who have it are unfortunate because they don't live a very long life. Also, their family members and themselves are suffering because they have to worry about themselves and the person with Turner's Syndrome. All in all, I feel very bad for people who have Turner's Syndrome because they are going through a lot.

Punnet Square Project

In class, we were given an assignment and that was to make a poster explaining how to create a punnet square and what the punnet square requires. We had to define the words heterozygous, homozygous, phenotype, genotype, recessive, and dominant. During the process of doing this I learned how to make a proper punnet square. After completing the project we were given, I realized that when making a punnet square you have to have the phenotype and genotype to figure out what exactly your trying to figure out.

Bank Robberies (social studies)

There has been many robberies in the state of New Jersey. 53 days into 2009, 23 banks have been robbed. People think it is because of the economy and how it's really bad at the moment. Steve Seigle thinks that because of the economy is causing the rates of bank robberies to go up. In the past there has not been many bank robberies in the winter.

Israeli killed a doctor's kids ( social studies )

The article tells us that Dr. El-Eish's just went through a tragedy losing his 3 daughters to a explosion by an Israeli tank in mid January. The Israeli military said it was unintentional. Dr. El-Eish's is a gynecologist and received his medical degree in Israel, also has worked in Israeli hospitals. The Israeli military commander gave order to his troops to shoot at the suspicious figures (Dr. El-Eish's 3 daughters). The doctor is well known and well liked by Israelis. Dr. El-Eish's didn't see any warnings from the military to evacuate from his house or anything so he assumed it was safe until this horrific tragedy happened to his life. I think that what the Israeli military did was not nice because what if someone killed their kids. How would they feel?

Apply and Worm video about Newton's Laws

In school we are learning about Newton's First Laws. On the smartboard we have in our classroom we watched a interactive video about how Newton's Laws influences us. On the video we watched it showed an apple with a worm inside. This video is a very helpful way of teaching people Newton's Laws and how they work. I think this video was very funny and interesting.

Obama's Inauguration (social studies)

The two articles below are about Barack Obama's inauguration on January 1, 2009. In the first article it tells you about the role of religion under President Obama. In the second article it tells you about the inauguration and infortmation about it.
In "The role of religion under Obama." The sermon that was delivered at the inauguration was fund by National Prayer Service. A woman was delivering the sermon for the first time. Religious groups broadly advertised the Obama transition team. Rick Warren and Gene Robinson represented the large constituencies. In the article it says, "To move from a consuming, polluting, poverty-creating economy to one that conserves, is a good steward of the environment, and focuses on bringing people out of poverty, that's more than a structural crisis, it's a spiritual one," said by Mr. Wallis.
In the second article it says that Obama is the 44th president. The theme of this years inauguration is "A New Birth of Freedom," because Obama wants to change America and make it better for everybody. The federal security office says that about 1.8 million people attended the inauguration. Many events were held in Washington, from 18 to the 21st, 2009.
I believe that Barack Obama will be a wonderful president if he fulfills the promises he has made to this nation. He is a nice man with dreams that will help U.S.A.

slinggy activity

In my science class we are learning about waves and how they move. One activity we did which helped us learn about transverse waves and longitudinal waves was when my science teacher gave each group a long sling. My partner and I stood in the hall way of our school and one student held one side and I help the other side. We stood far apart from each other and while one of us was holding our side firmly so we wouldn't move, the other person moved their arm up and down. This caused a transverse wave. When the wave begun it moved from one side to the other and it did this three times until it stopped in the middle, on it's way back to my partner.
I think this activity is very fun, it taught me about how waves travel to and from each side.

Way to cool huge trucks, eco-friendly way.

In the article below, they talk about a brand new way to cool large trucks in a way that helps the environment. When truckers are inside of their trucks, the smell of diesel, the taste of the exhaust fumes, and feeling of the truck vibrating. The people who drive the trucks let their trucks idle during the humid days, while they rest to keep the air conditioning going. The new way that scientist thought of is when the truckers turn their truck off, they pull a handle which gets the coolant around the ice and lets cool air blow from the unit into the extra area in the truck. This doesn't use any fuel.

I think that this process is very efficient because if the gas prices go up any time soon, this will be an easier way to save money. Also, since truckers drive for hundreds and thousands of miles, their trucks use many gallons of gas, so this will save them a load of money.
